Corfu Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias” (CFU) is squeezed onto a strip of land between Corfu Town and the Chalikiopoulou lagoon, only 3 km south of the old town. The runway sticks out into the lagoon on a causeway, which is why landing here, past the Kanoni peninsula and the little Mouse Island monastery, is one of the more photographed approaches in Europe. It handles around four million passengers a year, almost all between April and October.
Fraport Greece has run the airport since 2017 and extended the terminal, but it remains a single building with arrivals and departures on one level and a forecourt that is a short walk from the bus stop and the car park. The name honours Ioannis Kapodistrias, the Corfiot who became the first head of state of modern Greece.
Corfu Town is only 3 km away: about €15 by taxi or €1.70 on the blue bus 15. The resorts are spread along 60 km of coast, from Kavos in the far south (about €70) to Sidari in the north (about €60), so most visitors pre-book a transfer.
The car park is next to the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €12 a day, but it is small: hemmed in by the lagoon and the town, it fills on summer changeover days. Private car parks along the airport road take the overflow.
International and local rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall, with cars parked beside the terminal. Corfu’s roads are narrow, steep and winding, so rent small. Book early for July and August, when the island runs out of automatics.
Sit on the left side of the plane landing from the south: the approach curves past Kanoni, Mouse Island and the lagoon, and the runway causeway looks like it ends in the water.
With hours before a flight, walk or take a €10 taxi up to Kanoni: the café terraces overlook the runway threshold and are Europe’s best-known plane-spotting spot.
The green KTEL buses to the resorts do not come into the airport. Do not wait at the terminal for one; go to the green station by the new port.
Saturday is changeover day for the UK and German packages; the departures hall is at its worst between 09:00 and 14:00. A three-hour arrival is not excessive then, and two hours is enough any other day.
Corfu Town is close enough for a last swim and a coffee on the Liston before an evening flight: leave the resort early, drop the bags at the airport, and take bus 15 into town for two hours.
